Aya AU

The bar brawl was magnificent. It spread from the original bar (Dilan isn't sure which one that was) to three or four others, going in and out of them into something not quite a riot but not exactly not. Dilan got involved in the second bar on the trip, but managed to hold his own until the cops got there.

And he very politely sat down with his hands behind his head waiting for them to get around to him. Someone with that much facial metal (eyebrow, lip, nose), that hair, and that size tends to ping the combatant radar of everyone. Ever.

"Oddly, I could see that." she admitted. Even though it wasn't an activity you thought about in New York. "You do that often? Had off to the wilds of non-New York?"

"As often as possible, to be honest. It's cold here in the winter."

"Point taken." she admitted easily. She'd never been further away than Virginia to be honest, but she did have an extraneous amount of blankets. "At least you can control your building's heat. We have to bum around the warm places pretending to research..."

"Ugh, yeah. Mind, some of the labs have to stay cold, but that's life. I try to take a vacation just after I get sick and go recover in the warmth for a week or two." Dilan says with a smile in his voice.

Maybe this year he'll invite her along. Depends on how things go.

Needing some labs to be refrigerated to a degree made sense. She didn't want, or need, to question that. The part that caught her attention? "Sick?" there was a hint of worry in the tone.

From her experience with 'sick', well, Ben was a kid, that meant three days of hell. And Danny was a terrible patient who passed out in the squad car...

"Species thing. I spend about two weeks sick, every year." Dilan says with a dismissive tone, "Braig takes some time off while I do the coma part, and whatever girlfriends I'm dating at the time take some time off, and then I take people to Hawaii when I get better."

"..."

Another timer went off, and for a moment there was nothing but the shuffling sounds of pans being moved in between phone juggling. But, still..."Jesus Christ." she allowed at last. "Two weeks, with bonus coma? There cannot be an evolutionary benefit to that."

"Sure there is. If I were down in my people's home grounds I'd be estivating through that time. It's too damn hot to do anything else." Dilan says, "Since I'm up in the cold, I get sick."

"What about heading south pre-illness? Hibernating has to be slightly more comfortable." yay she remembered the definition of 'estivation' from biology?

"Or do you get sick regardless when you come north again?" after all, he was a bright boy, maybe it'd been tried!

"I get sick regardless. The difference is do I sleep through it or am I groggy, awake, and bitchy." Dilan says with a sigh, "So."

"...and here I thought the nine year old got it bad." she sighed. "That's a bitch, Dilan. I'm sorry." and the thing was? She meant it when she said it. She didn't know how not to.

"...so...I guess that kinda wipes out or winter sports optionms." she teased.

"Nah. We just plan around the sick times." Dilan says with a laugh, "I like skiing."

"Now I have to admit my idea of winter sports mainly falls in ice skating and snowballs fights..." she laughed. "And really bundled up either way. New York doesn't cater much to skiers. Like or unlike surfing?" she asked curiously.

"Different." Dilan says, "But still fun. I'm not a great ice skater, but I toss a mean snowball."

"I can understand different but fun." she admitted with a laugh. "So I won't just write it off as 'the slightly slower way down the mountain' anymore..."

"Hmm, ever join in the Rockefeller Center snowball blitz?" she asked curiously.

"Only when I'm not sick." Dilan says with a laugh, "Only when I'm not sick."

"And if you're lucky it didn't trigger the sick huh?" she really liked the giant snow wars. Sometimes the precinct even sponsored teams against the fire department and such. Not that 'teams' mattered so much by the tail end around three am...

"It's worth a little well wishing. Mind if I cross my fingers for you this year?" she offered cheerfully.

"Go for it." Dilan laughs again, "And if I am sick you can video your part for me and watch it when I get better, alright?"

"Dilan..." the calm, very calm shock carried through quite well "...do think I'd last one hour if I was trying to film?"

"Tell you what. If the finger crossing doesn't work, I'll ensure Pierce loses a bet and has to try to scrabble and focus through the snow alright?"

"I can rig up your hat with a camera." Dilan says with a laugh, "So that you don't have to think about it."

"A little too much like being under cover." she pointed out. "Besides, Pierce needs the fresh air..."

"Fair enough." Dilan agrees, "I'll rig Pierce up with snowproof equipment and tell him to focus on you."
