Aya AU

The bar brawl was magnificent. It spread from the original bar (Dilan isn't sure which one that was) to three or four others, going in and out of them into something not quite a riot but not exactly not. Dilan got involved in the second bar on the trip, but managed to hold his own until the cops got there.

And he very politely sat down with his hands behind his head waiting for them to get around to him. Someone with that much facial metal (eyebrow, lip, nose), that hair, and that size tends to ping the combatant radar of everyone. Ever.

"Hmmm, I know. A lot less to get distracted by when you're very young in college." she admitted. "Though I was in police training by twenty-one. My squad mates gave me so much hell when I was finally legal to drink." she'd never really considered a doctorate though. Maybe if she ended up getting pulled to the FBI or if she got hurt enough to make street work hard...

"Such a chore" she chuckled "Would you call that forced learning via social pressure?"

"Nah, not really. I like to learn, but it'd be pretty useless to learn doctoring my own species as long as I'm living on this continent. Just by going with the basic numbers human is the best bet for a viable practice if I ever leave Ansem."

He might. Dilan has done a lot of things in his life and plans on doing more if he ever gets bored.

"That brings up the fun question of...why here? Why aren't you in the south?" she asked easily. She was just honestly curious, and she really hoped it wasn't just because of Ansem. Sue her, she hadn't voted for the guy.

"One - I was born up here. I'm a half-breed, I just take after my father in everything but eye-colour. Two - Braig lives here, as do the steady girlfriends. Just because I'm not settling down doesn't mean I'm not in love. Three - my friends are here. Four - my job is here. Pretty much in order." Dilan says, taking a large bite of sandwich and giving her time to think about it.

Well, on the one hand, it wasn't just for Ansem and that was good. On the other hand, she was out having lunch with a man who already had steady girlfriends. Damn it, Danny would pitch a fit if he knew. Yeah, it was best not to let her partner in on that little fact...not after all his cheerful work to get her to dinner with anyone.

And oddly? It was actually a nice dinner, company wise.

"Pretty solid reasons, even if it does constantly shuffle you into the 'oddball, needs to be questioned' category." she chuckled after a moment. She was very, very good at hiding her thoughts...even when those thoughts pretty much led to 'Well, enjoy dinner and move on'. "Perhaps you should get a dossier to carry with you to bars..."

Dilan's lips curve and he says, "I'm not ready to settle down, Aya. If I ever do - my mom was a single mother and it killed her. I can't stand the thought of anyone being left alone if they lose one person." He doesn't have to read her face to guess - lots of people react badly to admitting he's poly.

"I don't mind being oddball or questioned."

Aya slowly tilted her head to the side as he explained what she hadn't asked about. Obviously she was slipping if he'd read her that easily...she'd work on it later. "I can see the advantages in your point of view." in a lot of ways her father had been alone. "But, I didn't ask. I assumed you had your reasons."

She finally took a bite of her sandwich then. Coffee had come first! "...thank you though."

"I'd like to keep seeing you." Dilan says casually, "Even if it's just on a friendly level. In the event that it ever became more than that it's necessary for me to be completely upfront about my relationships."

"Jesus Christ" she swore softly, eying him. No, really, he'd shocked her. A lot. An honest man in New York? An honest, non-cop, non-priest, non-medical doctor being so calmly upfront?

You didn't get that too often.

"Dilan, you are, perhaps, one of the most refreshing civilians I've ever met."

"I'm going to take that as a testament to my shining nature instead of as a derogatory comment on most civilians." Dilan says with a laugh and another bite of sandwich.

"Eh, take it with a grain of salt. I'm a terrible judge of people if they don't fall into my investigations somehow..." she admitted cheerfully. She liked to assume that most people outside of crimes were good people who deserved help?

'Good' being the questionable term of course.

"So, I'm curious...what exactly do you do, Dilan? Yes, you're a Doctor. But, what does that mean outside the medical field?"

"I'm a scientist." Dilan says, "Doctor is a title, but my job is scientist. I work with biology when we're looking into things of a biologic nature, and when we're doing other forms of experimentation I run the computer systems for Ansem's company. The whole thing, yes. Most of our work is aligned toward the interactions of metaphysics on day-to-day life, such as why magic works better on non-humans or the reasoning behind elementally separated magic. I'm not a terribly metaphysical person, that's Braig, but I know more than enough to make sure that the equipment is functioning at top shape, and when it comes to the bio side - such as why different species have different abilities - that's all me."

Actually, Aya was spoiled. She was used to Pierce: Computer Genius. Hearing that a single person ran an incredibly immense computer system? That really didn't phase her. It had been one of the conditions that Pierce set down when he agreed to join the NYPD.

"Most magics just feel...strange." she shrugged. "Even healing almost hurts...sometimes I'd rather just let nature take it's course." she admitted simply. "If you do find a reason for that? I'd desperately like to know. It'd make our medic glare at me less." It was good to know they researching something useful! "I'm not sure I'd volunteer for things that would change that...but I'd like to know."

"I'll let you know what I can." Non-disclosure is a fact of life, after all. "Hurting is pretty different, though. I've never heard of a person who had pain when magics come up. If you'd be interested in a couple of non-invasive tests, I'd make time."

"I'll take what I can get." she admitted wryly. Anything was better than nothing after all, information wise.

"I can handle tests. Give me a time and place. Barring, well, deaths, I'll be there."

Dilan reaches into his bag and pulls out a PDA - custom, he built it and it's sized for his fingers rather than a smaller person's fingers, "Thursday, Friday, or Saturday. Sometime between eleven in the morning and two in the afternoon, or after midnight but before three in the morning. Bring comfortable clothing and a pillow because the chairs suck and pillows are needed to sit comfortably."

She actually thought a moment, running through current cases and weekend schedules before she sighed "Friday, say one? I'll need to be back under by Saturday morning and that eats the whole weekend." and Thursday...she cooked. She wasn't giving that up.

Bad things happened when she did!

"I'm kinda used to terrible chairs, in case you didn't notice." she pointed out wryly.

"Friday at one." Dilan taps it in, sending it not only to his home computer but also logging it in the lab computer so that nobody else will book the time. "Would you like results mailed to you, or to come in for an in-depth consult? If the second I could use that as a reason to ask for your number, but truth is I was going to do that anyway."

"My number is readily available." she admitted with a grin "It's in the book, and our desk Sergeant is a gossip." she chuckled. That didn't stop her from pulling out her wallet and then passing over a card.

Yes, it had her rank, name, department and number for both desk and cell. Standard issue to pass out to witnesses and victims!

"Where am I going at one?"

Dilan gives her puppy-dog eyes that, nonetheless, have a laugh in them, "I meant your home number." and then it's back to business, "Ansem Laboratories, building C, fourth floor. You'll get a temporary passkey at the front desk which will let you onto the fourth floor, and it's all one room so you don't have to worry about that. The 13, 19, 27, and 63 all have stops in the complex."

"As if I'm ever home?" she countered with a laugh. "Trust me, you want the other numbers." she still hadn't gotten her answering machine to stop blinking twelve. She had two saved messages and it blinked twelve!

She had a notebook, not a PDA, but it served her well. "C and 4." she repeated simply. "Red line, Shore, Borough and Pete." she noted. "...I should get your number. I'll call if something happens..." cases were cases were cases. You didn't ask vics to hold on while you went to get your temp taken.

Dilan hands her his business card, which has his name and a line of numbers marked; Lab, Home, Cell. Like him it's a mix of the practical and the absurd - for all the limited information, the card itself is bright purple.

"Sounds good. If you're willing to have medical records sent to me I can get a general idea of your baseline statistics before doing testing."

...well. That wasn't getting lost in the wallet. "Budget ran out or you requested purple?" she asked teasingly as she tucked it away. She knew NYPD ended up with some crazy stuff when the budget flatlined after all. Like the coffee cups that were 'sample' sized. With ABC's on them.

"There's not much to know..." she admitted. "Just a lot of scrapes and bruises, but sure. Do I need to sign anything?" medical records were pretty routine right? Who didn't offer them up on the first date? And really, she wasn't joking about the 'not much' part.

"I like purple." Dilan says cheerfully, "And it made Xehanort's eye twitch. Xehanort is an asshole and we rather like fucking with him in ways that won't mess up the real work. You'll need to ask your doctor to send them over. What it will get me is all the stuff like your average resting heart rate, blood pressure, that kind of thing."

"Hmmm, from what I recall he's another apprentice..." she mused over another bite of sandwich. "The one who stands just a little too close to Ansem on camera." details, details...she didn't forget them usually?

""Send them to the same place?" she asked easily. Her doctor was a wonderful woman...and she be thrilled to see Aya when she wasn't bleeding!
