Aya AU

The bar brawl was magnificent. It spread from the original bar (Dilan isn't sure which one that was) to three or four others, going in and out of them into something not quite a riot but not exactly not. Dilan got involved in the second bar on the trip, but managed to hold his own until the cops got there.

And he very politely sat down with his hands behind his head waiting for them to get around to him. Someone with that much facial metal (eyebrow, lip, nose), that hair, and that size tends to ping the combatant radar of everyone. Ever.

"I had my parking space converted to a picnic area." Dilan says mildly, "But Central it is. I'll check out the show's times, and we can arrive there late enough to look through a little before it closes and then skate."

"Well Jesus...maybe you do." she chuckled. "Did they add trees and screaming kids too?" because chaos you didn't have to deal with was relaxing!

"...browse the art show?" she mused "Last time I even tried I was informed by the artist I wasn't qualified. So. I'll just look and stay quite okay?"

"Nah, just the running of grad students and lesser scientists." Dilan says with amusement, "And the trick when artists do that is to look disdainful, raise one eyebrow, and say, "Of course not." in the coldest possible voice. With practice you can make them think they just pissed off a critic."

"Almost as good as screaming kids." she admitted. "I'm sorry I misjudged your parking lot." she laughed.

"Eh, I don't run into enough art shows for it to matter? And even I did...I don't like doing disdainful unless I'm undercover." it was one of those expressions/emotions that she really hated to feel. So.

"I get a kick out of making people wonder what I know that they don't when they try to make me feel small." Dilan says with a shrug, "Comes from having been a freak most of my life."

"In that particular case? I knew what he didn't. Telling him so didn't really matter. Unless it's life and death somehow? I'm okay with letting people be." or maybe it was just really hard to truly make Aya feel slighted. Even in the case of the artist, she just didn't want a repeat of the screaming match it'd started with Danny.

"That's really admirable." Dilan says, shifting the phone from one shoulder to the other and smiling into it. "I'm not always that great a person, I guess."

"Nah, not really admirable. Quieter though." she chuckled. She had good qualities, she did. She just really didn't dwell on them?

"And there's a lot to be said for arguing your own point of view; people don't learn otherwise." she pointed out easily. "And isn't giving people access to information part of your chosen role in life?"

"Mmm." Dilan makes a so-so hand, "Gaining information, and figuring out how to use it. I don't try to hide things, Aya, but I do try to control the way that they're accessed in order to keep people from misusing them.

"And as a leading biologist there is a lot in my head that could be very bad for the world. I'm not letting that information out, and I will not allow any access to it until I've figured out ways to make sure the cures are easier than the curses."

"..." what was it Pierce always said? "...o, you only use your powers for good?" she laughed as something dinged somewhere.

"I really wasn't referring to the specifics of great breakthroughs and such though. I meant on a smaller, less secret scale scientists are about learning and teaching, so you totally have rights to turn people on their ear about assumptions and sneering?"

"Exactly, babe." Dilan says cheerfully, "Only for good, never for harm. It's a thing. And I'd pretend that I got that high-brow, but mostly I just enjoy it. Never to people who don't deserve it, mind, but I like you enough that I want you to like me for who I am, not who I might be."

"As long as I'm not around if you feel the need to be outright malicious, we're good." she promised simply. She was easy sometimes!

She'd have pointed out that it was too early for 'like', but she had remembered to call him, so..."Babe? You're starting to sound like Pierce..."

"I don't do outright malicious." Dilan protests, and then, "Sorry. Habit of casual speech left over from a childhood spent with surfers. I'll try to avoid it."

You can like something rapidly. It takes longer to know if it's a passing fancy or a lingering appreciation. She made a good first impression.

"No, don't worry about it. It was just kind of surreal for a moment..." she explained. Really, Pierce was the only one with the nerve to use the word? Unless it was a perp trying to get under skin, but that was beside the point. "Surfers?"

"Surfers. I am actually quite good at it myself, as long as I've got several hours to recover from getting ready."

Surfers tend to remove excess body-hair. This takes a team of people with hot wax when it comes to Dilan.

"Oddly, I could see that." she admitted. Even though it wasn't an activity you thought about in New York. "You do that often? Had off to the wilds of non-New York?"

"As often as possible, to be honest. It's cold here in the winter."

"Point taken." she admitted easily. She'd never been further away than Virginia to be honest, but she did have an extraneous amount of blankets. "At least you can control your building's heat. We have to bum around the warm places pretending to research..."

"Ugh, yeah. Mind, some of the labs have to stay cold, but that's life. I try to take a vacation just after I get sick and go recover in the warmth for a week or two." Dilan says with a smile in his voice.

Maybe this year he'll invite her along. Depends on how things go.

Needing some labs to be refrigerated to a degree made sense. She didn't want, or need, to question that. The part that caught her attention? "Sick?" there was a hint of worry in the tone.

From her experience with 'sick', well, Ben was a kid, that meant three days of hell. And Danny was a terrible patient who passed out in the squad car...

"Species thing. I spend about two weeks sick, every year." Dilan says with a dismissive tone, "Braig takes some time off while I do the coma part, and whatever girlfriends I'm dating at the time take some time off, and then I take people to Hawaii when I get better."

"..."

Another timer went off, and for a moment there was nothing but the shuffling sounds of pans being moved in between phone juggling. But, still..."Jesus Christ." she allowed at last. "Two weeks, with bonus coma? There cannot be an evolutionary benefit to that."

"Sure there is. If I were down in my people's home grounds I'd be estivating through that time. It's too damn hot to do anything else." Dilan says, "Since I'm up in the cold, I get sick."

"What about heading south pre-illness? Hibernating has to be slightly more comfortable." yay she remembered the definition of 'estivation' from biology?

"Or do you get sick regardless when you come north again?" after all, he was a bright boy, maybe it'd been tried!

"I get sick regardless. The difference is do I sleep through it or am I groggy, awake, and bitchy." Dilan says with a sigh, "So."
