Aya AU

The bar brawl was magnificent. It spread from the original bar (Dilan isn't sure which one that was) to three or four others, going in and out of them into something not quite a riot but not exactly not. Dilan got involved in the second bar on the trip, but managed to hold his own until the cops got there.

And he very politely sat down with his hands behind his head waiting for them to get around to him. Someone with that much facial metal (eyebrow, lip, nose), that hair, and that size tends to ping the combatant radar of everyone. Ever.

It was polite to call. She'd said she would, and it was polite.

And maybe, just maybe he'd been a high point in a really bad week and she wanted to touch on that again. So, she turned her music down (The Pirates of Penzance today, she needed the comedy), and cradled her phone against her ear.

Yeah, it was only after dialing that she realized that she really should have thought about what she was going to say.

"Dilan, what can I do for you?" he sounds cheerful enough, anyway, and the sounds of a video game in a holding pattern are lightly behind him.

She listened for a moment, just to see if she could ID the repetitive music, but shrugged it off when she couldn't. "Hey, it's Aya. I take it I'm not interrupting?"

"Aya! Hi!" Dilan perks up even more, "Nah, I'm just running through the beta on a new game to find glitches. How're you doing?"

"Honestly? I'm a bit rough right now. But, I've stew going. And a pasta bake almost ready to go in so the day itself isn't so bad..." she admitted cheerfully enough.

"What kind of game are you testing?" Ben would love to know anything about games that could be coming out...and it was always good to have something to distract the nine year old with.

"Science-fiction RPG." Dilan says with a laugh, "All about flashing electronics and medic packs. I'm not ready to talk about the rest of it yet. Anything I can do about that roughness? I've got good shoulders to cry on or hit, and a collection of foreign films large enough to choke an elephant."

"Hmmm, the kid will kill me if that's all I have to give him." she noted over the sound of the over door closing. "I guess I'll have to find something else to distract him with."

"If I wanted to hit things I'd be at the gym Dilan. Nara is always willing to toss me at the rookies." she tried not hit other people. Well, except Danny and Ben when they earned it. "And I've Gilbert & Sullivan in now, probably followed by Turandot, so I'll be alright. Thanks for the offer though."

"Chances are I smell better than the rookies do." Dilan points out, and he's waggling his eyebrows even though she can't see it. Maybe some of that comes out over the phone. "Let me know if there is anything I can do, though. Not just polite social noises, but really. I want to help."

"Hmmm, but there's less chance you need to learn that the tiny girl can hurt you." she pointed out reasonably. "Call putting up with the less appealing guys a public service."

"What you can do...is tell me about roller skating? That'll get me through to Wednesday afternoon when I'm free. And you can tell me what I can bring, snack wise since I'm cooking anyway."

"Well. There's a skate park on Madison where we can probably go, although it can be a little crowded. If you don't mind later evening skating it tends to clear out around eight, when all the kids go home for supper. There's also Central Park, although that has pedestrians on the paths a lot and they're a hazard to anything other than a slow amble. If all else fails, there's the far parking lot out by the labs." Dilan is obedient. Sometimes. "As far as snacks go? Well, the usual sort of things to keep your bloodsugar up and be able to eat while moving. I have a shameless fructose addiction, like the sucrose addiction of other species."

"The place on Madison is out I'm afraid. It's not a good place for off duty cops since the boys broke the drug trade there." she didn't envy the vice guys. Her perps at least tended to stay in jail for awhile!

"Central's alright though I think there's suppose to be an art show or something this week?" a sidewalk show maybe. "Maybe that'd be a go in the evening too...so, as long as it's not Madison I leave that up to you." she admitted. Either could be interesting?

"Hmmm, so a little fruit is good and nice, but not too much to make you shake?' she offered.

"I have to balance the fruit out with meat and carbs." Dilan agrees, "But I usually bring my own meat because that stuff can get expensive, compared to fruits and veggies. Yay for being a carnivore."

"Alright, you handle meat I'll handle snacks and carbs...between us we might manage an edible meal?" she teased gently. She...had a small cooler right? In a closet somewhere from when she used to camp right?

Yeah, probably.

"Any preferences on carbs now or you willing to cross your fingers and hope?"

"Whatever is good for you is good for me." Dilan promises, "And if you want a full-on meal I swear I can provide more than just snacks. I've got some homemade Samosa and papadum in the freezer..."

"Eh, I offer food because I'm cooking and you fed me last?" she admitted. "If you're up for a whole meal though, I'm definitely hoping we go to Central. You just don't get that comfy in a parking lot..."

"I had my parking space converted to a picnic area." Dilan says mildly, "But Central it is. I'll check out the show's times, and we can arrive there late enough to look through a little before it closes and then skate."

"Well Jesus...maybe you do." she chuckled. "Did they add trees and screaming kids too?" because chaos you didn't have to deal with was relaxing!

"...browse the art show?" she mused "Last time I even tried I was informed by the artist I wasn't qualified. So. I'll just look and stay quite okay?"

"Nah, just the running of grad students and lesser scientists." Dilan says with amusement, "And the trick when artists do that is to look disdainful, raise one eyebrow, and say, "Of course not." in the coldest possible voice. With practice you can make them think they just pissed off a critic."

"Almost as good as screaming kids." she admitted. "I'm sorry I misjudged your parking lot." she laughed.

"Eh, I don't run into enough art shows for it to matter? And even I did...I don't like doing disdainful unless I'm undercover." it was one of those expressions/emotions that she really hated to feel. So.

"I get a kick out of making people wonder what I know that they don't when they try to make me feel small." Dilan says with a shrug, "Comes from having been a freak most of my life."

"In that particular case? I knew what he didn't. Telling him so didn't really matter. Unless it's life and death somehow? I'm okay with letting people be." or maybe it was just really hard to truly make Aya feel slighted. Even in the case of the artist, she just didn't want a repeat of the screaming match it'd started with Danny.

"That's really admirable." Dilan says, shifting the phone from one shoulder to the other and smiling into it. "I'm not always that great a person, I guess."

"Nah, not really admirable. Quieter though." she chuckled. She had good qualities, she did. She just really didn't dwell on them?

"And there's a lot to be said for arguing your own point of view; people don't learn otherwise." she pointed out easily. "And isn't giving people access to information part of your chosen role in life?"

"Mmm." Dilan makes a so-so hand, "Gaining information, and figuring out how to use it. I don't try to hide things, Aya, but I do try to control the way that they're accessed in order to keep people from misusing them.

"And as a leading biologist there is a lot in my head that could be very bad for the world. I'm not letting that information out, and I will not allow any access to it until I've figured out ways to make sure the cures are easier than the curses."

"..." what was it Pierce always said? "...o, you only use your powers for good?" she laughed as something dinged somewhere.

"I really wasn't referring to the specifics of great breakthroughs and such though. I meant on a smaller, less secret scale scientists are about learning and teaching, so you totally have rights to turn people on their ear about assumptions and sneering?"
