Kiddie AU - Aya's living on the couch.

"She's WHAT?!" Elcy, it turned out, could roar. Much like a lion...only louder, if her son was to be believed, "Braig! Why didn't you tell me this earlier? We have spare rooms!"

"Mom...I..."

"We," Dilan broke in, "we didn't think..."

"I am very disappointed in the two of you. You are going to march right over there, young man," that was with a pointed finger at her son, "and grab that poor girl's things and bring them back here. You," at Dilan, "are going to get the larger of the spare rooms set up for her. I am going to go shopping. What's Aya's favourite colour?"

"Sky blue." said Braig, already grabbing his coat and heading out. He did not, nobody argued with his mom when she was that angry.

"Sky blue. Fine. Dilan, call Yinsi and let him know Aya is moving in with us."

"...Yes'm." Dilan mumbled, the last thing Braig heard before the door closed.

It didn't take long for him to get over to Aya's house...Aya's...old...house. "Hey! Ayay! You here?"

Aya siggggghed and pulled out a new sheet of paper so she could make a list of all the numbers in the problem. Otherwise she'd lose track! From there it was simpler, though she still thought the problem needed people.

"Why don't they just say that?!"

"Because in the real world that's the kind of problem you'd have to learn." Dilan said, "You need to know how many nails and saws the people working on something would need. Like that trebuchet that we're gonna build together, it's all maths."

Braig came up by the time Aya was finished with her homework and brandished a tray full of healthy snacks and drinks. Water for Dilan, juice for the other two.

"Yeah, but that's why the world has smart people like you guys. I just get to put things together the way you say right?" She grinned and stuffed her homework (plus extra page) back in her backpack. "Aren't I right Braig? Say I'm right!"

"You're smart too, Aya." Dilan said instantly, with Braig ruffling her hair, "You are really smart, monkey. Remember, you don't have to be as smart as us, you just have to keep up."

He'll always wait for her. Ever since that trip to the zoo. So there's love and affection in the hair-ruffle, just like there is in the tweaking of Dilan's short stubbly hair.

"I am keeping up!" She huffed then bit into a carrot piece. "But sometimes that means you gotta tell me where to go cause you think I should be there!" Or giving her directions to build things cause she didn't do the math herself!

"Is the trebuchet gonna be like homework now?!"

"Yes, you are keeping up." Braig agreed, "But a good follower learns as much as she can for herself so that she can know when her leader is being an idiot and tell him so." Braig, of course, considered himself the leader. He was twelve.

"No." Dilan assured her, "It'll be fun! You won't even notice the maths!"

She wrinkled her forehead as she reasoned that one through for a moment then blinked at Braig. "You're not the boss of me! You just give directions sometimes!" He sounded like he'd been watching too much super hero cartoons!

"Oh, good."

"We take turns being boss." He just spent the most time there! "That's part of being friends, too. When I know most about what we're doing, I'm in charge. When you do, you're in charge." Like shopping. He admits Aya, at six, is way better at finding sales than he is, "When Dilan does, he's in charge."

Dilan's contribution to the conversation was to crunch on an apple slice.

"So why aren't I suppose to learn in order to lead good huh? Why do I have to learn everything so I can call you a dummy?" Because THAT was what she'd gotten out of his statement.

Ooo, apple slices. She took one of those after she was done angry-crunchy her carrot.

Braig grinned at her, the same grin he'd have when he was twenty-two, or fifty-two, or a hundred and two. "You have to learn the minimums, like your maths, to follow. You have to learn even more to lead."

Nom nom nom so staying out of this la la la.

"Nuh-uh. The kids down the street don't even know addition and they follow just fine." So there Braig! Winning wasn't exactly easy with Aya at any age? Not six, twenty-six, or a hundred and six. "So I think you're lying a little!" Maybe not a lot of lying, but a little!

"But they're not part of us." he gestured at the three of them, "They're not worth anywhere near as much time as we are." Ego, he has it.

"So if one of us is a leader, and the other two are following, what are they then?" She asked, curious despite herself.

"Minions." Duh, "Sometimes we're leaders, sometimes we're minions. Other people are lackeys."

"So wait, are we minions or are they minions? I asked about them and you said us!" But, more importantly, "Does this mean we get a volcano?"

"We're minions, they're lackeys." Braig said, "And if you want a volcano we can totally get a volcano. When we're older, I don't think mom would let us have one now."

Dilan is trying to eat ALL THE APPLES.

"Okay, so we're all minions, they're lackeys, and we can have a volcano!" She lifted her hands in a cheer. "Does this mean we're bad guys now?" And heeeeyyyyy she wanted another apple! If he bit her finger she'd bop his nose.

"Nah, we're not bad. We're like...like the Victory Team. Except that we're two geniuses and one kickass little girl, not three fighters."

Dilan just gave her sad-eyes, he didn't try to keep the last apple slice. "Ayay isn't just kickass, she's also really brave."

"Oh good, I don't know how to be a bad guy." Aya admitted. Maybe she did need to do more studying. "And I like being a good guy." Huh. Last one? She broke the apple slice into pieces and passed them around as a matter of course.

"Course I'm brave, cause I can wear an octopus on my head!"

"I'm good." Braig held up a handful of granola. The kids could have the apple piece.

Dilan, manfully, ate carrot instead. "We're awesome good guys. We're gonna make the world a better, safer place when we're grown up."

"Okay!" Aya cheerfully crunched her apple pieces since the boys were munching other things. "Uh huh, I'm gonna be a cop! And you guys can be cops too! Or presidents!"

"Scientist." Dilan mumbled into his second carrot, "I'm gonna be a scientist. I'm gonna find out why I'm the only Katzu-halfbreed. I'm gonna help Katzu learn how to have more babies."

"I'm going to be a metaphysicist." Braig informed them, "I'm going to learn all about magic and why it works how it works, and help learn new ways to travel and fight monsters and things."

"Okay, you can ALSO be presidents too though, cause you're smart." Because a lot of that went over her head but hey! "But that means we'll be an awesome super team! A doctor guy who helps people have babies, the guy who makes it easy to fight monster, and I can arrest bad guys!"

"Sounds good to me." Braig, honestly, would be okay just as long as the three of them stay together.

Dilan flopped on the carpet, tapping his fingers in some kind of pattern known only to his own mind...he was totally high on sugar.

Downstairs the door swung open, "Kids! Help me with the car!"

"He's totally had too much apple!" Aya laughed and poked Dilan's side. If that didn't get her into a tickle match nothing wou---ulp. "CAR!"

That was like saying 'We're coming down' right?
