Kiddie AU - Aya's living on the couch.

"She's WHAT?!" Elcy, it turned out, could roar. Much like a lion...only louder, if her son was to be believed, "Braig! Why didn't you tell me this earlier? We have spare rooms!"

"Mom...I..."

"We," Dilan broke in, "we didn't think..."

"I am very disappointed in the two of you. You are going to march right over there, young man," that was with a pointed finger at her son, "and grab that poor girl's things and bring them back here. You," at Dilan, "are going to get the larger of the spare rooms set up for her. I am going to go shopping. What's Aya's favourite colour?"

"Sky blue." said Braig, already grabbing his coat and heading out. He did not, nobody argued with his mom when she was that angry.

"Sky blue. Fine. Dilan, call Yinsi and let him know Aya is moving in with us."

"...Yes'm." Dilan mumbled, the last thing Braig heard before the door closed.

It didn't take long for him to get over to Aya's house...Aya's...old...house. "Hey! Ayay! You here?"

"Okay, that might be good." If the maid lady was nice and her dad didn't get mad or something. "Door!" Naturally she had to say it as she darted past him to get it.

Door was open now, yay?

Braig headed inside and up to Aya's new room. Dilan was putting new sheets on the bed, "Mom's not home yet. Hi, Ayay. Hug?"

Aya followed, kinda drifting behind him. Sure, she'd seen the room before, but...well, now things were weird. It made her drag her feet a little. She didn't know if she was suppose to feel bad and need hugs now or if Dilan was offering a normal hug, but he'd asked and he didn't really ask and...

...she was over thinking things.

Naturally, the first thing out of her mouth was, "Braig has all my stuff."

Well, 'cause she looked like she needed it! Dilan wrapped her up in a hug and squeezed until she squeaked (but then loosened up again), "Well, yeah. That way it's all here. Unless you want to put some in our room, that'd be okay too."

And yes, squeaking! Squeaking! And hugging back anyway. "I dunno," she just...didn't. "I'm suppose to wash my PJs now I think."

"I'll do that!" Dilan suggested, "You should tell Braig where you want things. Are you gonna want pillows in the window, like you had at your dad's?"

"No, Braig should put those boxes down and leave them." Until she figured out things. Where things were going. If they were going.

They were her things.

Today was confusing.

Window at her dad's..."Oh, right! I need help with math!"

Braig...put her boxes down and slid them out of the way, "Sure, monkey-girl. Which one of us do you want to help you?"

Because they got confusing when it was both of them.

"Uh...word problem." Because she couldn't pick right now. "It's a word problem with fractions and screwdrivers." Because word problems were WEIRD.

"I got it." Dilan said, mostly because while Braig would try...he'd also get really bored, really fast.

"I'll go get snacks." Braig suggested, "What do you want, monkey-girl?"

"Okay, thanks Dilan!" Aya thumped her backpack down so she could dig out her homework. "And thanks Braig! Um, crunchy stuff?"

"Crunchy stuff...granola, carrots, and apple slices?" It gets a little healthy and a little sweet for everyone.

"Sounds good to me." Dilan agreed, sitting cross-legged on the floor of Aya's room. "Okay, show me the problem!"

"Okay!" Yep, she was just good with the whole 'getting food' thing!

"Here, look. How many screwdrivers, in what rad...rat...ratio to saws will be needed to build seven houses?" Of course there was information about how many screwdrivers it took to make two houses, and how many saws to make three but..."It takes people." Duh.

"Okay, ignore the words and find all the numbers." Dilan said, starting to walk her through the math problem.

Aya siggggghed and pulled out a new sheet of paper so she could make a list of all the numbers in the problem. Otherwise she'd lose track! From there it was simpler, though she still thought the problem needed people.

"Why don't they just say that?!"

"Because in the real world that's the kind of problem you'd have to learn." Dilan said, "You need to know how many nails and saws the people working on something would need. Like that trebuchet that we're gonna build together, it's all maths."

Braig came up by the time Aya was finished with her homework and brandished a tray full of healthy snacks and drinks. Water for Dilan, juice for the other two.

"Yeah, but that's why the world has smart people like you guys. I just get to put things together the way you say right?" She grinned and stuffed her homework (plus extra page) back in her backpack. "Aren't I right Braig? Say I'm right!"

"You're smart too, Aya." Dilan said instantly, with Braig ruffling her hair, "You are really smart, monkey. Remember, you don't have to be as smart as us, you just have to keep up."

He'll always wait for her. Ever since that trip to the zoo. So there's love and affection in the hair-ruffle, just like there is in the tweaking of Dilan's short stubbly hair.

"I am keeping up!" She huffed then bit into a carrot piece. "But sometimes that means you gotta tell me where to go cause you think I should be there!" Or giving her directions to build things cause she didn't do the math herself!

"Is the trebuchet gonna be like homework now?!"

"Yes, you are keeping up." Braig agreed, "But a good follower learns as much as she can for herself so that she can know when her leader is being an idiot and tell him so." Braig, of course, considered himself the leader. He was twelve.

"No." Dilan assured her, "It'll be fun! You won't even notice the maths!"

She wrinkled her forehead as she reasoned that one through for a moment then blinked at Braig. "You're not the boss of me! You just give directions sometimes!" He sounded like he'd been watching too much super hero cartoons!

"Oh, good."

"We take turns being boss." He just spent the most time there! "That's part of being friends, too. When I know most about what we're doing, I'm in charge. When you do, you're in charge." Like shopping. He admits Aya, at six, is way better at finding sales than he is, "When Dilan does, he's in charge."

Dilan's contribution to the conversation was to crunch on an apple slice.

"So why aren't I suppose to learn in order to lead good huh? Why do I have to learn everything so I can call you a dummy?" Because THAT was what she'd gotten out of his statement.

Ooo, apple slices. She took one of those after she was done angry-crunchy her carrot.

Braig grinned at her, the same grin he'd have when he was twenty-two, or fifty-two, or a hundred and two. "You have to learn the minimums, like your maths, to follow. You have to learn even more to lead."

Nom nom nom so staying out of this la la la.

"Nuh-uh. The kids down the street don't even know addition and they follow just fine." So there Braig! Winning wasn't exactly easy with Aya at any age? Not six, twenty-six, or a hundred and six. "So I think you're lying a little!" Maybe not a lot of lying, but a little!
