Dilan needed a break before the others did, although not by much. He needed to recover from having been ill, and he REALLY needed a good workout or seven. Spending the time in Aya's apartment wasn't bad, and after his first trip to Nara's gym he came back to spend some time watching TV and doing his hair.

Which is why when Ben got in there was a seven foot tall fluffy Katzu wearing a towel and a hell of a lot of piercings lounging in front of the TV with wax.

Ben slid the key home then opened the door, swinging on it as bonelessly as any twelve year old could. The door (and Ben) swunnnng inward and...

...And Ben blinked.

That was not Aya.

Aya was undercover and not coming home for a while which was why the Chief kept checking in. He dangled from the doorknob for several moments then blinked and checked the apartment number. Yep, right apartment, so..."You're in the wrong apartment and I'm friends with all the cops nearby." JUST SO THE STRANGER KNEW.

Yeah, the...naked stranger. On Aya's couch. In the secure building that required a key to get in the floor level door much less this one. "And I have mace." He was a very jaded twelve?

Dilan looked up and said, in the kind of blank tone of voice that meant he wasn't really thinking about it, "I am a cop. I'm one of Aya's partners."

Then, after a moment, "You must be Ben."

Yeah, Ben was just going to hang on that doorknob a little longer and say, flat out, "Prove it."

And the first things that came to mind were, "She's kind of scary flat before coffee, can eat seven double-downs in a single sitting, and knows two dozen ways to geld a man."

The first two facts made Ben let go of the door and drop his book in the hall. The last made him blink. "Okay, what's geld?" Obviously this man knew Aya at least a little and was comfortable enough to shower in her apartment so...

UH...

"...you're not naked on the couch right?"

"It means to remove the penis and balls." Dilan said, "And no, I'm wearing a towel. Aya just has really small towels that happen to be the same colour as my skin. If you want to grab a blanket or something I can just drip into that."

"...is there actually a class for that in cop school?"! WHOA! Because...WHOA. Wait. This guy wasn't gelded right? "She only does that to badguys right?" Because that would be...awkward.

"And it's cool, as long as you're not naked. So. did Aya come too?" Why yes he was looking around for her now!

"Only to guys who try to get all up in her business." Dilan said, shrugging, "And no. Aya and Braig...our other partner, my boyfriend...are still under. I'm just taking some time to recover after being sick."

[mitochondriaaya]

"...I think there's a lot of guys like that." Ben admitted quite soberly. "That means she almost like...a serial...cutter?" Maimer? Did he know that word? Eh. Whatever.

"Oh. So." Yeah. "Yeah, I'm Ben. Hi." Um.

"I can make dinner?"

"Not that many. Generally she's able to stop them before it gets that bad." Dilan said, then he shook his hair, "I've got food on. There's enough for both of us, assuming you don't eat like Aya does. I'm Dilan, Aya's told me about you."

"I can't eat like Aya!" He wasn't a teenager yet! "What are we having?" Because that really was the most important question at the moment.

Then, and only then, "I don't get to know a lot about you guys. When she called on Thanksgiving was great but that's not long you know? So tell me about you?"

"Chamorro Red Rice, it's a dish from Guam, with beef stuffed bell peppers and Rumman Fil Ma'zahr for dessert. It's a sweetened pomegranate dish, I don't like sugar much." Katzu and all.

He'd....heard of one of those! That was okay though, Aya fed him weird stuff all the time and it was usually pretty good. "I can't have milk stuff, just so you know. Does any of it have milk? Or cheese? Sometimes I can have a little cheese if I take a pill before we eat."

"Nope. No milk, no cheese." Dilan grinned, "Aya mentioned you're lactose intolerant, and it's easy enough for me to cook around it. I went with meat, vegetables, and fruit. Now that I've met you, you can tell me some of the stuff you like and we can work on that kind of food later. I'll be here for a week."

"Oh, hey, cool!" About the no milk thing. He liked when he could try everything someone actually cooked (his mom had a mac&cheese addiction). "Aya and I get cookbooks at garage sales and just kinda try stuff? I'm learning the easy stuff from her mom's diary too."

[sliceitwithwind]

"Right on. Sometime after we're out from under I'll send you a lot of the stuff mom taught me after my momma died. I wasn't much older than you are now, so it should be things you can pick up pretty easily." It was casual and with a smile, "Braig doesn't eat a lot of cheese stuff either, Olia you know." Mostly veggies! Because otherwise his Katzu frowns at him.

"...your mom taught you after she died? Did she die in the kitchen or something?" Yes, he was getting big, wide eyed stares now! Because, well, ghost chef! HOW COOL WAS THAT?!

[sliceitwithwind]

"...Mom and momma." Dilan said, "Sorry. I call my biological mother momma, and Braig's mother is mom. Braig's family took me in after my momma died, but since I'd practically lived with them for years anyway it wasn't that big a deal. I've always called mom mom because I didn't have a father and it would have been weird to call dad dad and mom Aunt Elcy. Now, of course, Braig and I are practically married so it makes even more sense to call her mom."

"Oh...I'm sorry." For not catching that really. But the idea of calling someone else mom or momma or whatever and not just the real mom...huh. Well then. Stuff to think about right? "So you guys are like married? And that's okay that you work together?"

[sliceitwithwind]

"Well, we've been dating longer than a lot of marriages have lasted." Dilan said, "And it's bending the rules a little bit, but since we make an excellent team they really can't afford to split us up."

[mitochondriaaya]

"Huh...then why aren't you married?" If they'd been dating that long it made sense to get married right? "And that's cool. Like a super team!"

[sliceitwithwind]

"Because we want to find at least one woman to marry both of us, and we figure it'll be nicer to marry everyone at once so that whatever woman it is doesn't feel like an after thought." he said easily enough, "And I think we're a pretty dang super team, yeah."

[mitochondriaaya]

"...huh?" Dilan had just blown the twelve year old's brain. "You can marry more than one person?! Is there enough lines on the paper you sign for that?!" Because obviously this was the biggest worry.

[sliceitwithwind]

"It's not really common." Dilan said, cheerfully, "But it can happen. You have to get a special license to do it."

[mitochondriaaya]

"Oh, so extra lines and you get a card when you marry more than one person? Like a driver's license?" Details, details, details? He could MISINTERPRET EVERY ONE OF THEM! "Good luck getting married!"
