Kiddie AU - Post growth spurt

It'd been a week, but Dilan...was nowhere near used to his new size. He kept banging into walls, doors, low hanging objects. Anything dangling from the ceiling, and he kept forgetting how wide his shoulders were as well. It was driving him insane.

Not to mention the fears that his size and new, distinct lack of "cuteness" meant that he was hideous looking. He wasn't ready to go back to college, not while still recovering from the agony of the growth spurt, so he was curled up at home trying to get used to himself. Braig had needed to go back and pick school work up for the two of them, trusting that Aya would take care of Dilan until he got back.

Dilan was curled up on the back porch with a couple of blankets and a book. And a protein shake the size of a monster slurpee cup.

"It'll be alright though," she pointed out softly, eyes tracing the rock's path as well. "You were born to be a badass you know, and my favorite katzu. You just match your brain size now."

"Heh." Dilan chuckled a bit, but shook his head, "I know, it's just. Weird. I'll get used to it, but it'll take a while."

[mitochondriaaya]

"Tell me anything I can do to help?" Anything at all! She worried about him! "You've been waking yourself up worrying haven't you? I swear you haven't been getting four hours..."

"I've been getting my four hours!" he said, shaking his head, "But, yeah, it's taking longer to get my four hours than it should."

She reached up to take his hand, wrapping her fingers in his as they walked. "Well, that's better than I thought," she'd been half waking up in the night with him awake when he shouldn't be! "I can still worry though!"

"I know. I'm sorry." Dilan said, giving her hand a gentle squeeze, "I don't mean to make you worry."

"And I don't mean to make you guys worry so I guess it all balances out!" Aya chuckled softly. "Think Braig will kill us for shopping without him?"

[sliceitwithwind]

"Not as long as I come out looking reasonably okay." Dilan said, laughing, "It's just my taste he doesn't trust."

[mitochondriaaya]

"You'll come out looking amazing," Aya promised cheerfully. "I just never can tell if Braig actually enjoys shopping or just dressing us up...so he could be sad he missed this." Granted, if it was just the dressing up bit he could demand a fashion show of Dilan and be happy!

"I dunno." Dilan said, "I don't really get fashion. It's all just body-coverings to me."

[mitochondriaaya]

"Because fashion is stupid," Aya pointed out. "I don't think any of us wear fashionable stuff unless we have to go to one of Elcy's fundraisers or something." And those were picked by Elcy, Yinsi, and sometimes Braig so they didn't need to understand fashion anyway.

"Clothing on the other hand is easy. Protection against the elements and public decency you know. As long as nothing makes anyone else's eyes bleed or anything you're good!"

"Yeah, but I have Katzu eyes." Dilan pointed out, "And I still don't get why chartreuse and lavender don't go together."

[mitochondriaaya]

"Because it makes you look like an Easter bunny and that just doesn't work for you!" Aya laughed cheerfully. "It's two generally bright and spring-like colors together on a dark hunter. It's...incongruent? Is the word?"

"Hmph." Nope, he just wasn't going to get it. It was pretty, damn it.

[mitochondriaaya]

"I'm all light skin tones and hair though, so I can pull off spring stuff easier? If you really want I can wear those colors for you?" Aya offered to that noise. It might cheer him up? "Where I just look washed out and kinda sick in the darker colors."

[sliceitwithwind]

"No, it's okay." Dilan said, shaking his head.

[mitochondriaaya]

"Okay," she squeezed his fingers cheerfully. "I guess it boils down to colors don't always flatter whoever is wearing them no matter if the colors, and the person, are gorgeous separately?"

"I'll take your word for it." Dilan said with another hyper-gentle squeeze. He was terrified of accidentally breaking her fingers.

She wasn't made of porcelain! She wasn't going to shatter! "Yeah, well, I'm not a fashion student so I could be wrong too." Hah, bus stop ahead! "Do you want to get tickets or snacks?"

"Tickets." Dilan said, "You get snacks."

"Okay! What do you want?" She pressed Elcy's card into his hand and grinned. "Milk and meat?"

"Yup. As always." Dilan agreed, heading over to pick up their tickets.

She tugged on one of his dreads in parting and headed for the little store across the street to pick jerky and a gallon of milk in four quarts for him and jerky, and some trail mix and juice for herself. More milk could only be good for him right now!

And he drank almost a gallon when he was small, so...

Anyway, the next bus was slotted to leave in ten minutes!

Dilan found a seat while waiting for Aya to get back, watching people and flexing his hands. So. Big.

Aya found him with a grocery bag and promptly claimed his lap for her own seat before showing him the shopping spoils. "How long do we have until we leave? And are we getting the return tickets later or do we have a time limit for shopping?"
